Aquafari Curaçao and St. Michiel Area

Although snorkeling in Curaçao is fantastic, we decided to try Aquafari Curaçao to see what it is like to ride on a "self-propelled submersible scooter."

We received notice that the meeting point for the Aquafari activity had been changed to Boka Sami Beach and that turned out to be a good thing as it introduced us to a quiet and beautiful area.

Aquafari Curaçao

After watching a safety and introductory video, we walked down to the nearby pier and used a ladder to get into the water.

We were waiting in the water near the pier for a while to get all six submerisble scooters unloaded and started, but didn't mind because we waited in such a beautiful setting.

Those in our party who had snorkeling masks with them were able to watch fish underneath the surface while we waited.

We each took turns swimming up and into our individual submersibles and it definitely was a different experience to breathe underwater without a snorkeling tube or other air source directly attached to our mouths.

The submersible scooters did not go really fast (though they went faster with the current and slower against the current), but they were still fun to drive around. We didn't need to go to far to see interesting coral and other underwater features.

There were three people diving with us at all times: the guide, a man who watched our diagnostics, and a woman who took photographs.

The Aquafari Curaçao experience was about 2 hours with the training and waiting for the submerisble scooters to be unloaded and have us board them. We enjoyed the novelty of this activity and also really appreciated this area of Curaçao that Aquafari introduced us to and which is the subject of the remainder of this post.

Fort Sint Michiel

We didn't really notice it on our way down to the water to board the submersible scooters, but on the way back to the parking area it was more obvious to us that we were passing Fort Sint Michiel.

Although Fort Sint Michiel is probably not something we'd have gone out of our way to see, it was fun to see it while merely walking back from our underwater experience. It has been labeled a "hidden treasure."

Boka Sami / Boka St. Michiel

The Sint Michiel Bay area provides fantastic views.

If we ever have the opportunity to return to Curaçao, I think me may try snorkeling in this area.

DiVerse Sauzen Curaçao

The local restaurant DiVerse Sauzen Curaçao was one of those unexpected and satisfying discoveries that are so special when visitng a new place because they are not planned.

We primarily ate lunch at DiVerse Sauzen Curaçao due to its proximity, but are glad we did because we loved the food, the scenery, and talking to the guy who seems to run the place.

We had a lengthy lunch here and only saw one other couple eating at the same time as us on this weekday. We essentially had the view to ourselves.

We really enjoyed the food as well.

Some goats wandered near us looking for their own lunches at the same time.

St. Michiel Area

Everything about the St. Michiel area was a welcome surprise to us. This quiet area has a small but beautiful beach, highly visible water for snorkeling, Aquafari, ruins of a fort, and an excellent restaurant in DiVerse Sauzen Curaçao (probably our consensus favorite lunch on Curaçao).
