Nafplio (Nafplion)

During a visit to Greece filled with pleasant surprises, the most positive surprise of all for us may have been Nafplio.

Nafplio is often referred to as Nafplion.

Nafplio has two castles situated in prime spots for viewing. The first is the Castle of Palamidi situated above the city.

This castle overlooking Nafplio is also referred to as the Fortress of Palamidi and Palamidi Fortress in Nafplion.

The other Nafplion castle is the picturesque Bourtzi Castle (AKA Nafplion Bourtzi Fortress).

Wikipedia describes this castle succinctly: "The water castle of Bourtzi is a Venetian castle located in the middle of the harbour of Nafplio."

Bourtzi Castle is illuminated at night and really stands out against the dark harbor at night.

We took a short boat tour around Bourtzi Castle and around the harbor.

The boat tour took us back behind the hill with the palace on top to see part of the harbor we had not realized was back there.

It was nice to see Nafplio from the harbor.

Because Nafplio is a coastal town, it's not surprising that it has other gorgeous waterfront views.

These photographs represent the sunrise view from our room's balcony at the fantastic Amphitryon Hotel.

We really enjoyed the breakfast at Amphitryon Hotel (as we did at all the Greek hotels we stayed at). This was the one breakfast in Greece that was table service rather than buffet style and the view of the harbor was fantastic.

Nafplio isn't just about castles and its coastal views. It also features a charming downtown.

It's a beautiful Old Town.

Nafplion Syntagma Square is a pleasant meeting place.

We had excellent gelato at Antica Gelateria Di Roma-Nafplio and were happy that we got there just in time to beat a lengthening line of customers.

We had read that the Greeks like to serve the entire fish and it was at a harbor-side restaurant in Nafplio that we experienced this firsthand.

We absolutely loved our time in Nafplio and wish we had spent more than one night there. It's a relatively short distance from Athens and will be on our list to visit again on a side trip when we are fortunate enough to return to Greece.

The following titles or sentences from posts on Nafplio prove that we're not the only ones who were unfamiliar with the gorgeous town.
