Vergina (AKA Verghina) is located southwest of Thessaloniki.
We stopped in Vergina on the way to Meteora and Kalambáka.
The main attraction in Vergina is the Museum of the Royal Tombs of Aigai, but the small town is charming in its own right.
We started with a tasty Greek lunch at Filippeion restaurant.
The Archaeological Site of Aigai is featured on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The museum is a modern facility that is kept dark inside and no flash photography is allowed.
There are numerous artifacts on display that were excavated at the site.
Vergina is the location of the burial sites of several kings of Macedon, with the most famous being the tomb of Philip II.
The ruins of the small temple are dramatic.
The fresco "Hades Abducting Persephone" is detailed and beautiful and was even more interesting to view after our tour guide Eva pointed out some of its details.
Here are some more artifacts on display.
There is also natural beauty outside of the museum. In addition to the mound, there are olive trees.
We enjoyed our time in the town of Vergina and experiencing its modern and impressive museum.
