Assisi is one of two classic hill towns we were able to visit on our first trip to Italy (the other was Civita di Bagnoregio). Coincidentally, these two hillside towns are the first two listed towns in the article "10 Incredible Hilltop Towns in Italy".
The small, hilly Assisi itself is a photogenic charmer.
The numerous narrow and hilly roads and paths are picturesque.
It's easy to "find" (or stray into) side roads to explore.
Assisi also offers gorgeous views.
Assisi's Piazza del Comune (Communal Square) is a charming plaza area.
A dominant feature of Piazza del Comune is the Temple of Minerva.
The most recognizable aspect of Assisi is arguably the Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi.
We were not allowed to take photographs inside the large and beautiful Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi, but photographs of the interior of Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi are available online, including on their website.
Assisi is featured on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
We were fortunate to see Assisi and the Basilica and the Sacred Convent of San Francesco in Assisi on the day we did because the Pope was scheduled to arrive (and did arrive) in Assisi the following day and we would not have been allowed entry (and the town would have been far busier) on that day.
